Brittney Yevette Griner (born October 18, 1990) is a basketball player from the United States.
She was the first player in NCAA history to score 2,000 points.
She plays for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association.
Griner arrived in Russia in February 2022 to play in the Russian Premier League during the WNBA offseason.
Russian authorities detained her at Sheremetyevo International Airport.
The Federal Security Service discovered in her luggage vape pens containing a prohibited substance in Russia.
Griner pled guilty during the trial on July 7 and then said, "However, there was no intention. I didn't want to go against the law."
On August 4, 2022, Griner was sentenced to
nine years in Russian prison.
According to the US government, they are doing everything they can to get her release.
