Meghan Trainor spoke with CNN about her life after “All About That Bass,” her new album, and the value of self-love.
This week, she appeared on CNN’s “Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace?” to discuss her fifth studio album, “Takin’ It Back,” which was released on Friday.
“I noticed that the first few songs were a little heartbreaking. “At first, they were depressed,” she explained. “And I said, ‘No, I’m happier than I’ve ever been.'” “Why am I depressed?”
“Remind Me,” the album’s 15th track, began as a meditation on how “it’s really hard being covered in scars,” according to Trainor. In February 2021, the musician gave birth to her first child via Caesarean section.
“And it’s me singing to my husband, because he always tells me I’m pretty, and I’m like, I feel like I’ve been ripped apart with the stretch marks and the C-section.” It took some time for me to like myself again and be able to look at my body.
“It took a long time for me to like myself again and to be able to look at my body after all that scarring,” she explained.
The album also includes songs about “mom guilt” and the difference between social media and reality, such as “Don’t I Make It Look Easy.”
“My first songs were about being a mom and not making it look easy,” Trainor explained. “I’m worn out. And I’m a working mom who suffers from mom guilt. And I tried to make them relatable by including them in each song.”
Trainor describes herself as a “melody queen,” beginning each song with a melody. On this album, however, she concentrated on the lyrics and message behind each song.
“I’d sit on my piano a lot before the songwriting session, do homework, and then I’d have an idea,” she explained. “Fortunately, it worked every time, but I was like, I’ll do a chorus and then let the songwriters come in and we’ll craft.”
Self-love is a recurring theme throughout the album’s 16 songs.
“It’s the hardest thing, and that’s why I write all these self-love songs,” she explained. “You’re incredible.”
